One Down Eleven To Go

Yep, it's the last day of January 2012. 1 down, 11 more months to go until it's Christmas once more!

It's too scary thinking how time flies so quickly. I supposed the only way to stop the days from going so quickly is to take everyday slowly. So this year, I'm taking one day at a time. Let's see if I will have accomplished things by the end of the year.

We have a brand new store at Storenvy. Storenvy is a social marketplace of cool stuff from thousands of indie sellers. Check out our awesome new shop or click that cool store icon on the top left menu.

This year, we are taking markets seriously so we will be attending shows and fairs more often. This Sunday, 5th of February, visit us at Heritage Craft Fair and St Ives Handmade Market. Come to a fair where time stands still, where you can see craft being created right before your eyes. Is it date? Please come and visit us.

Back to sewing after 4 weeks of being slack!

You may not know, but I'm the type who sometimes makes a sketch but most of the time, it's all in my head. With an idea in mind, I just go ahead and cut, design and sew! So, it's not surprising that my initial idea won’t make it to the final product.

The Tote I made over the weekend is nothing like what I was planning to make. But as always, I love how I diverted my design and ended with a totally different bag. And yes, you guessed it right, this new design is coming out in the next few weeks just in time for my next market!

Maybe when I get more free time in the future, I can make it better. But for now, I hope that this humble dress will somehow fit a girl in Africa.

A journal is where I write my thoughts and ideas, draw and sketch my designs, jot some notes or for just about anything!

Creative Lane

We had a great day at Creative Lane yesterday. This cute little art and craft festival opened its doors to the public for the first time. We were surrounded with creative designers and artistic talents with fresh creations. We even learned how to make an origami crane from one of the workshops. It was a fun day and we finished it off with dinner from this Chinese Seafood Restaurant just across the road!

My first collection of fabrics were from one of my favorite artist, Laurel Burch. My love for bright and vivid colours naturally attracted me to her works of art that I started to collect her fabrics.

It took a lot of courage to cut these out of print fabrics. So I only made one of each kind.

There are only 5 of these fun wristlets which measures approximately 9 3/4" x 5 3/4" (14.5 cms x 22 cms). These wristlets will be available at the Handmade Canberra Upmarket on June 11 at the National Convention Centre in Canberra and at Creative Lane Art ad Craft Festival on June 18 at Marrickville Town Hall.

Don't Throw It

My sister, Joan from Heyboom, just recently moved to a new place and while packing up, she decided to get rid of some swatch fabrics that she doesn't need any longer. Instead of throwing them in the bin, she threw it out all the way to Australia.

These beautiful designer guild fabrics were just too beautiful to throw away.

50s Inspired Handbag

Over the 5 day Easter long weekend, I've been working on 2 new bag designs and one of that was the 50s inspired handbag. Back in the 50s, the handbag was literally a handbag, the bag was worn over the forearm.

In this bag design, I sort of made the handle a little longer so it can be worn over the shoulder. I am thinking of making some bags with shorter handles too. I am happy with the result of this design. These bags will have leather handles accented with rivets. For the next few weeks, I will be making different variations of this bag for the Handmade Market on June 11.

A hat and gloves will finish the 50s look. Do you like it? I know you would love it!

Clutches with a Twist

am loving this batch of cute clutches, they're all oh so yummy!

These beauties measure approx 9 1/4" x 4 3/4" (23.5 cms x12 cms), has 2 pockets inside, twist lock and corners are reinforced with rivets.

As always, they are made of beautiful designer fabrics, some in cotton linen blend. So go ahead, challenge yourself and take your pick. Warning: It's not going to be easy! :D

It's Riveting Time

I finally had the chance to play around with the hand press which came all the way from Bulgaria. So I've gone crazy riveting!

Pressing is easy, as long as the size of your rivet is long enough to accommodate the thickness of the materials (leather + fabric + interface and what have you!). But I managed (aherm!), actually, my elf managed to press them all in place.

So, is there anything you want me to rivet? :D

The Grocery Tote with leather handles and rivets --- nice!

For this cute Pochette, I was planning to put some O-rings. Bu it was too thick and like I said, if it's too thick the size of the rivet should be able to handle it. In this case, it wasn't too long. So no O-rings for this beauty!

The leather has arrived, yay! I just love the smell of leather. Now I can't wait for my hand press and rivets to come so I can get my hands on them.

New materials have also come in. Beautiful new fabrics, leather, notions and these cute antique peacock and heart pendants. I can imagine these cute pendants in a one-of-a-kind clutch.

April and May is going to be really busy as I prepare for the big event in June at Handmade Canberra, make some stocks for Shop Handmade and for a new handmade gallery in Newtown. And who knows, I might get accepted for this handmade event in May here in Sydney. We'll see ... so much to do, so little time!

Birthday Card

I made this cute card for my daughter's birthday today.

I was thinking, instead of buying her a card from the newsagent, why not make a handmade birthday card. After all, I have so much scrap fabrics which I "hoard" in a big plastic container found under my sewing table.

This fabric card is made of a combination of felt and fabric. I liked how it turned out to be so rustic-looking and so imperfect. The card is closed with a purse foot.

I'm glad the birthday girl loved her handmade birthday card especially that there was a $urpri$e for her in that dotted pocket!

Limited Edition Goody Clutches

How can you not love these cute clutches?

I call them the 'Goody' Clutches because the "bling" that you see in every single one of them was taken from a vintage goody clip. I came across a basket of vintage clips and found 10 pieces of these cute hair clips. As soon as I saw them, so unloved in that sale basket, I knew they would look really special as an accent to a clutch.

This clutch design is new. I just love the size (25 cms x 19 cms) and oh, they are slightly padded with felt, so the shape stays in place and your gadgets are safe inside.

Inside you will find a zippered pocket (yes, it is zippered) and 2 small slip-on pockets for your phone and stuff.

So, how can you not love these cute clutches?

Another Fun Tote-making Workshop

Had a fun day with Carmela and Janice today at the Tote-making 101 workshop. The weather was hot but at least it wasn't as bad as before. It took as little longer as usual but we got there. Handmade Market - Feb 19, 2011

We had a really busy day at the Handmade Canberra Upmarket today. It was great to see people's reactions and comments on all Kikay bags on display. Although it was raining outside for a few hours, the market was still packed. What a beautiful venue, so comfortable and spacious. All in all, it was great market fun!

Workshop Day

Today was the Tote-making 101 workshop. It wasn't really the best weather for sewing but at least we all had fun. I really enjoyed teaching Lauren and Angelica and it was so nice to share my knowledge to 2 beautiful people who had so much enthusiasm to learn.

Tote-making 101

These Tote Bags, while deceivingly simple, will be the basis for all of your future bag-making pursuits. By using this type of tote as a foundation, and in addition to your innate creativity, you can begin to explore different ways to use what you've learned into other forms of bags such as satchels, clutches and messenger bags.

Tote-making 101 will be the first step in your bag-making journey! This is a beginner's class in bag-making not a beginner's class in sewing. But even if you don't have a background in sewing, that's okay too! So long as you know your way around the sewing machine, you'll be fine.

This workshop is for you if you are comfortable using your machine (even though you don't know all the features of it!), can sew in a straight line and back stitchand can thread and load the bobbin. This course is a practical, hands-on bag-making workshop rather than a formal, classroom learning experience.

First Ever Facebook Auction

This afternoon, out of the blue, I thought about having an auction on Facebook. I thought it would be fun for a change. Then someone said that I should go ahead and do it tonight. So there, a snap auction at a very short notice!

I wanted it to be short and quick, so I set the auction for 1 hour starting at 8.30pm Sydney time. I was thrilled to have the first ever Kikay Design fan page auction. Although it wasn't very well advertised, I actually had fun! I might do it again and next time I might give enough notice to everyone!

Here are the bags that were sold to Molly, Emily and Lauren at giveaway prices. Lucky girls, I hope they will enjoy the bags as much as I enjoyed making them.

Handmade at its best

In November last year, my daughter told me that the Art Gallery of NSW is bringing China's Entombed Warriors to Sydney. As soon as I found out about it, I marked my diary. The same way I marked my diary last year when the Gallery of Australia brought the original masterpieces of Van Gogh, Gauguin and Cezanne from the Musee D'Orsay. So off we went last Monday (Jan 3). There was a long, long queue but it was worth the wait. Actually, it wasn't that bad, we only waited for 1/2 hour.

What caught my eye was the description of each type of figures ... "each was individually finished by hand, no 2 figures are alike"! Wow, handmade at its best!

The Gallery only exhibited ten of the main figure types that made up the First Emperor's Terracotta Army plus rare objects from the First Emperor's burial site and other tombs. It was amazing, considering these Terracotta figures have been buried for over 2000 years. Unfortunately, picture-taking was not allowed so here are some pictures I took from the Souvenir booklet I took home. One day, when I get to visit the actual place in China, I will get to take a picture of them. In the meantime ... enjoy!

Soap Supply for 2011

I can't believe the last time I made handmade soaps for my family was in December 2007. We are almost running out of supply and the Christmas break was just the right time to make more.

I normally cure the soaps for 8-10 weeks, but of course, the longer it cures the better. So far, I have done 8 kilos but this is not enough for us to lasts the whole year. I think I will be making a few more kilos just to make sure.

Most of my soaps are made of goat's milk and 50% of the oils is Olive Oil. The essential oils I used in these batches of soap are Lavender, Mandarin, Grapefruit, Orange, and Lemon. I have also put in a bit of Cocoa Butter and Jojoba oils. In all of my soaps, I always put Tea Tree Oil.

The workshop will be a way to relax your mind, pamper yourself, an opportunity to try something new or simply to enjoy a day to discover and explore your "hidden talents" and creativity, while socialising with like-minded people.

Designing and making your own bag is not only fun but also satisfying because you did it all yourself. Imagine wearing something you made that no one else will have!

These workshops will be held in a small studio located in a quiet, leafy Sydney suburb, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, which guarantees a relaxed atmosphere.

Expressing my Creativity

Oh my, I have so many ideas in my head, I have started to write them down. I have this cute lime green notebook that I use to scribble my thoughts immediately. But guess what, the notebook is beginning to fill up!

How I wish I could have more than 24 hours in a day. I have numbered every idea and highlighted them everytime it's done. But the list just keeps on growing.

I have decided to stop accepting orders for now because I feel that it is keeping me from expressing my creativity. I get so frustrated that I have a lot of things I want to make but there is just not enough time. So now I want to focus in making new designs and embark on a collaboration project with another artist. I get excited when I can freely express what I want to make.

In August 2007, I sold this one-of-a-kind Pochette Bag on Etsy. Back then, I was only starting to learn how to sew. It took me 2 weeks to make this bag.

This cute bag has a top zipper closure and it was made of a rare 100% cotton canvas which I purchased from Ebay UK. I called this bag, 'Flower Power in Blue'.

Since then, I have only made 2 other bags in this design but in different fabrics. I plan to resurrect this design very soon.

Why is it that when you go on holidays, the days go so quickly? It's been a hectic 2 1/2 weeks but I had so much fun from shopping to sightseeing and lazing around. But of course, I took the time to look for eye-catching fabrics.

It's been a week since I came back and I'm still settling in. As usual, there's so much to do, so little time. Winter Break

The idea of a passport wallet was borne out of need. I needed something to keep my family's passports safe and also to make it easy for me to find it in my "Mary Poppins" bag. So the idea of a funky passport wallet clicked into my head.

These cute passport wallets have 2 inside open pockets so you can just slide in the front and back cover of your passport into the slots and open it just like a book. Or, you can insert it in as a whole and use the other slot for some other stuff like an e-ticket perhaps? Keep on Moving

In the past I have been on and off the treadmill depending on my mood. I had no motivation at all. To be fit and healthy, the recommended daily step goal is 10,000 steps.

2 weeks ago I decided to invest in a good quality pedometer to motivate me to keep on moving. This pedometer is my new BFF (but only second to my Blackberry). I wear this gadget all day and since then, I had been conscious of how many or how little steps I have done in a day.

At the moment my goal is to make at least 20,000 steps a day so I could lose weight. I have joined a challenge at 10000steps.org.au and I've been averaging 16,700 steps a day. Still behind my goal of 20,000 but it's a good start.

On weekends, I walk around the estate where I live. 5 kms in the morning and 5 kms in the afternoon. I realized how beautiful the place is. In my walks, I get nice views, fresh air, smell the grass and hear the birds chirping. It makes me appreciate how lucky I am to experience nature right where I live.

To reward myself for being good in the past 2 weeks, I decided to get myself a new pair of shoes. Aside from being so cute, it is so comfortable. I chose this because it is meant to feel like you are walking or running barefoot. It is called Nike Free Run.

My current I-Challenge will end in April. If all goes well, I hope to lose weight by then. I can't wait to get myself a new pair of jeans as a reward. So yes, it's on. I am determined to shed those kilos!

Life is too short

I always hear this phrase and as I grow older everyday, I come to realized that life is indeed, very short. Day in and day out we do our normal daily routine that we don't have the time to appreciate the little things, like the flower weeds on the streets or the beautiful trees around us.

On the weekend, I found that one of my high school friends was diagnosed with Stage 4 Brain Cancer. Three years ago, she beat Stage 3 Breast Cancer and she is again fighting for her life. She is a very strong woman, so I hope and pray that she will beat this once again like she did before.

It's good to know that she has family and friends that she can lean on. My whole batch have organized to raise funds to help for her chemo treatment and all other medical expenses. In my own little way, I hope to pledge some proceeds from any sale of my bags. As you know, these treatments are very expensive and for someone like her who have 4 young kids, it is not easy especially when you live in the Philippines.
